Proper Tire Maintenance- Why It Matters

Here are a few ideas from Cars.com on why maintaining your vehicle's tires is important.

1.  Over- or under-inflated tires can affect stopping distances

2.  Ride and handling-  if your tires over-inflated, your car will ride stiffer, if they're under-inflated, it won't handle the way it was intended, and you could have less control.

3.  Fuel economy.  Improperly inflated tires can affect your gas mileage, by as much as five percent, so you can stretch your fuel dollars by an extra mile of so just by keeping your tires at the correct pressure.

4.  Tire wear-  Under-inflated tires will ride too much on the sidewalls, while over-inflation will lead to excess wear in the center.  You can extend the life of your tires by up to 25% by keeping them properly inflated.

Tip-  Where to check for your cars proper psi.  While your tires themselves have recommended (maximum) psi, the proper amount will still vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Tip #2-  Rotate your tires regularly.  The easiest way to remember this, is to have your tires rotated when you change your oil (assuming get your oil changed regularly!)

You can find this information on most cars on a label in the door frame.  For older cars, refer to your owners manual.
